The most common sign is that the knob feels loose or spins freely without engaging the timer or cycle selector shaft. If the internal D-shaped plastic housing has cracked, stripped, or worn down, the knob will no longer be able to grip the metal shaft of the control switch, preventing you from selecting or starting your cycles.
Installation is straightforward and typically requires no tools. In most cases, you simply pull the old, damaged knob straight off the control shaft. Align the D-shaped opening on the back of the new knob with the flat side of the control shaft and press it firmly into place until it is seated securely.
These knobs are subject to daily mechanical stress. Over time, the constant torque applied during cycle selection, combined with the heat and vibration of the appliance, can cause the internal plastic ribs of the knob to fatigue or crack. Once the internal structure loses its integrity, it can no longer maintain a tight fit on the metal control shaft.
